Walter Sickert, RA, RBA, was a German-born British painter and printmaker who was a member of the Camden Town Group of Post-Impressionist artists in early 20th-century London. He was an important influence on distinctively British styles of avant-garde art in the mid and late 20th century. Sickert first came to Bath during the First World War, when he was forced to give up his normal practice of painting abroad. He loved Bath’s Georgian architecture, slightly seedy and soiled by that date, and the way the buildings and streets appeared to stretch effortlessly into the surrounding hills.

Following a degree in the History of Art at the University of St. Andrews, Richard began his career at Sothebys in 1987. He worked in their salerooms in Chester, Sussex and London focusing on British and European pictures and prints. He joined Lawrences in 1999, based in the West Country, having previously been an Associate Director at Phillips Auctioneers where he oversaw picture sales and valuations for the firm in Central Southern England.
